Nancy Island: Sailors, Schooners & Navigating Waterways

Step into the shoes of 19th century sailors and discover how people travelled, survived, and worked on the waterways of the Great Lakes. Explore the world of schooners and canoes and learn why lakes and rivers were the highways of the past. Discover how vital supplies moved during the fur trade and the War of 1812 and uncover the important role of the historic HMS Nancy in keeping trade and military routes alive. Try real sailor skills, including tying essential knots, learning how ships measured speed in “knots”, and communicating using signal flags. Learn about navigation tools like compasses, maps, spyglasses, and natural landmarks. Each participant will build and decorate their own spyglasses, using simple materials.
Important:
• Please be sure to you arrive onsite ten minutes before the program start time, as it will be starting promptly at 10am. Please ensure you allow adequate time to find parking, and review parking and site visiting information prior to the day of the program. Space is limited.
• Parents must remain with their child at all times.
