Discover the Magic of “Beyond Books”: A Stunning Art Installation

We are excited to unveil Beyond Books, a breathtaking kiln-fused glass installation created by renowned glass artist Kelly Ford-Dulson, now proudly displayed at the Wasaga Beach Public Library (WBPL). This exceptional piece was generously donated by the Wasaga Beach Friends of the Library (FOTL) to commemorate the opening of WBPL’s new facility, and it’s a celebration of more than just books—it’s about knowledge, connection, and community.

The inspiration for Beyond Books stems from the library’s mission to be a welcoming, progressive space for learning, culture, and social interaction. Each panel of the window beautifully reflects the library’s values, starting with “Handwriting” and moving through to “Books,” “Braille,” and finally the digital world with a working “QR Code.” The final panel honours the library’s vibrant community, with a nod to the volunteers and their dedication to fostering learning and creativity.

The glasswork itself is a marvel. Using a technique known as kiln-fused glass, Ford-Dulson meticulously crafted 20 panels over the course of 34 kiln fires, reaching temperatures of up to 1465°F. The artwork’s translucent beauty transforms throughout the day as natural light changes, offering a dynamic viewing experience from both inside and outside the library.

Not only does Beyond Books reflect the past—through the early forms of communication such as handwriting—but it also points to the future, with its representation of the digital age. Visitors are even invited to interact with the artwork by scanning the working QR code embedded in the window!

The installation also features clear lower panes symbolizing oral history and the heritage of Wasaga Beach’s Indigenous peoples, reminding us that libraries are places of storytelling and shared knowledge, both ancient and modern.

We encourage you to come visit WBPL, not just to see this extraordinary artwork, but to experience firsthand how libraries are about much more than books—they are about connection, creativity, and community. Beyond Books embodies that spirit perfectly. We hope it inspires you to explore the endless possibilities that await beyond the pages of a book.

Visit us today and witness the beauty of Beyond Books—an artwork that celebrates the transformative power of learning, inclusion, and innovation.
