Dialogue & Interior Life – Revealing Character on the Page

May 31 @ 2:30 pm - 3:45 pm
Join us for a day-long Woven Word Symposium. Attend our workshops for writers!

Join us for the second of two workshops for writers on Sunday, May 31st. In this afternoon workshop, learn tips for dialogue writing.

Great dialogue isn’t just about what characters say — it’s about what they think, feel, avoid, and reveal in the spaces between words.

In this 75-minute workshop, Patti Murphy explores the relationship between dialogue and interiority, and how the two work together to create depth, tension, and emotional resonance. Learn how to write dialogue that sounds natural without becoming filler, how to layer subtext beneath spoken exchanges, and how to use interior life to sharpen conflict and deepen point of view.

You’ll leave with practical strategies for making conversations dynamic, purposeful, and rich with meaning — on the page and beneath it.

Free to participate. WBPL membership not required.

Register separately for the morning workshop starting at 10:00 AM : Crafting a Scene- Turning Moments into Story. Click here: (link to morning workshop)

About the Presenter:

Patti Murphy writes character-driven fiction about complicated women making questionable decisions under pressure — often with magic involved. She is the author of the Stafford Falls series and recently published Deep Fried Evil, an urban fantasy set in an Ottawa diner where supernatural threats are handled alongside the lunch rush.

Her work has been described as emotionally sharp, darkly funny, and deeply interested in the consequences of love, loyalty, and the choices made in their name.

She spends most of her time making things up, and occasionally leaves her desk to talk about how stories work.
