Georgian Bay Reads: Celebrating Canadian Literature at the Wasaga Beach Public Library

The Wasaga Beach Public Library is excited to host Georgian Bay Reads, a much-anticipated literary event that brings together local libraries and celebrates the rich diversity of Canadian literature. This year’s gathering takes place on Saturday, October 26, at 7:00 p.m., in the ReMAX By the Bay multi-purpose room, located in the library. Admission is free, but tickets are required and can be reserved via Eventbrite at georgianbayreads.ca.

What is Georgian Bay Reads?

Georgian Bay Reads is a unique literary competition that unites five local libraries: Clearview Public Library, Collingwood Public Library, Meaford Public Library, Springwater Township Public Library, and Wasaga Beach Public Library. Each library selects a “defender” who will advocate for a chosen book, passionately explaining why it stands out as the best read of the year.

This event promises an evening filled with engaging debates and thoughtful discussions, as literature lovers gather to appreciate the beauty of storytelling and the impact of Canadian authors. The defenders will present their books, each with their own compelling arguments, ensuring an evening full of literary excitement.

The Defenders and Their Books:

Jeff Cepukas, representing Collingwood Public Library, will champion Station Eleven: A Novel by Emily St. John Mandel. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, this novel weaves together the lives of a Hollywood star, a would-be savior, and a group of actors dedicated to preserving art and humanity.

Beth Seaborn Harte, from Clearview Public Library, will defend Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This powerful blend of Indigenous wisdom and scientific knowledge offers a unique perspective on our relationship with nature.

Jeffrey Snape, representing Wasaga Beach Public Library, will present The Spoon Stealer by Lesley Crewe. Set on the eastern coast of Canada, this novel explores themes of family, humor, and resilience in the face of adversity.

Sharleen McLean-Moodie, from Meaford Public Library, will advocate for Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest by Suzanne Simard, a journey revealing the deep connections between trees and the natural world.

Donna Carrick, from Springwater Township Public Library, will defend The Maid by Nita Prose, a captivating mystery that delves into perception, truth, and the human experience.
