27 Oct Wasaga Beach Public Library Wins Georgian Bay Reads 2024
Georgian Bay Reads returned this year with an evening of passionate debates, lively discussions, and a room full of book lovers cheering on their favourite defenders. The Wasaga Beach Public Library is thrilled to announce that our very own Jeffrey Snape’s championed book, The Spoon Stealer by Lesley Crewe, took home the Georgian Bay Reads 2024 trophy!
Held at the Wasaga Beach Public Library, the 15th annual event brought together five local libraries for an unforgettable night of literary competition. Each defender, representing their library, shared spirited reviews and powerful arguments for their chosen books by Canadian authors, each hoping to take home the coveted trophy for their library.
The evening kicked-off with a warm welcome by Wasaga Beach Public Library CEO Pam Pal, who introduced this year’s defenders:
- Beth Harte for Clearview Public Library (Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer)
- Jeff Cepukas for Collingwood Public Library (Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel)
- Sharlene McLean-Moodie for Meaford Public Library (Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard)
- Donna Carrick for Springwater Township Public Library (The Maid by Nita Prose)
- Jeffrey Snape for Wasaga Beach Public Library (The Spoon Stealer by Lesley Crewe)
The competition heated up quickly, moderated by 2023 champion Gia Lynde, with defenders passionately presenting their books, challenging each other, and winning over the audience. Between rounds, attendees enjoyed refreshments, explored the beautiful new library, and cast their ballots for the People’s Choice Award.
As each round unfolded, it was clear that Jeffrey Snape’s defence of The Spoon Stealer was winning hearts—and, ultimately, votes! We’re incredibly proud of Jeffrey and grateful for the community’s support.
As we wrap up Ontario Public Library Week, we want to thank all who attended and all five participating libraries: Clearview Public Library, Collingwood Public Library, Meaford Public Library, Springwater Township Public Library, and of course, Wasaga Beach Public Library. Your enthusiasm makes this event so special. Here’s to another amazing year of Georgian Bay Reads, the power of books, and the joy of community. See you next year!
